What is ultrasound and how does it work?

Ultrasound is high frequency sound you can not hear. Ultrasound is emitted by the transducer and reflected back when it encounters surfaces of higher density. The transducer works as a "loudspeaker" creating the sound waves and a "microphone" recording the returning signals. The returning signals are detected and create an image of the examined area. Dense structures, such as bony surfaces can not be penetrated by ultrasound. Less dense structures such as muscles, tendons and joint cavities however, can be imaged in great detail.

Ultrasound is used in all areas of medicine. This includes the evaluation of internal organs, our cardiovascular system, the unborn baby and also the musculoskeletal system.

Is Ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound has been widely used for almost 30 years in medicine. So far no health risks have been identified with ultrasound. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and FDA has not found any negative side effects of ultrasound so far. The World Health Organization (WHO) sees the value of ultrasound and supports is usage when indicated, acknowledging the fact that the benefits outweigh possible risks.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is not painful and no specific preparations need to be considered before undergoing an Orthopaedic ultrasound.

The examination usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. You will be asked to lie on a couch or sit upright in a chair and expose the area to be examined. Lubricating jelly will be applied to your skin. This guarantees ideal contact of the transducer to your skin surface. The transducer is placed on the skin and moved over the surface. Immediately, black and white images will appear on the screen. A report will either be given to you separately or be included in your individual consultation note by the examining health care professional.
