What is a CT scan (CAT scan)?

CT (computed tomography, CAT scan) is special x-ray equipment that uses the x-ray to obtain image data from different angles around the human body, and then uses the computer processing of the information to show cross section of the organ.

What does the equipment look like?

The CT scan consists of two main parts: the gantry which is square in shape with a hole in the center, and the table which is a flat moving table.

How should a patient prepare for the procedure?

On the day of the exam, avoid wearing clothing with zippers and snaps. The patient may also be asked to remove hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids. It is best to arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time of the examination. Prior to the procedure, women should always inform their physician or x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that they might be pregnant.

How long does CT examination take?

It depends on the type of examination and the part being examined. Typically, a CT scan exam takes less than 15 minutes.

How is the procedure performed?

After preparation of the CT room and explanation of the exam procedure to the patient, the technologist begins by positioning the patient on the CT table. The patient body or the part being examined may be supported by sponge or immobilize pad to help hold it still in proper position during the scan. As the study proceeds, the table will move slowly into the gantry, and you will hear some noise and feel the motion of the table. The technologist will be able to communicate with you during the whole procedure.

How does the patient get the result of the examination?

The digital examination will be copied to a CD which can be reviewed at any personal computer; regular x-ray film can be printed if required. There will be also a typed x-ray report in the patient record.
